Before consoles pushed online gaming to the masses, competing with others over the internet was confined to the PC. This arena was dominated by Quake, a first-person shooter from id Software, and its sequel Quake 2. In 1999 Quake’s place on the podium was challenged by Epic’s Unreal Tournament.

Off the back of Epic’s gorgeous but disappointing single-player FPS Unreal, the studio and designers Cliff Bleszinski (yes, THAT Cliff Bleszinski) and James Schmalz focused entirely on multiplayer FPS action. It paid off. Unreal Tournament was a huge hit, eventually making its way to consoles, and set up the studio to become the major player it is today.
