The SteamWorld series is one of the most diverse video game franchises. Set in a post-apocalyptic steampunk world, the gameplay has blended elements of RPG, action, strategy and even simulation. SteamWorld headhunter, announced in 2021, was to become the sixth installment in the series, offering up a third person co-op adventure, with a desert world setting and brand new game mechanics.

For this game, its predecessor became its greatest enemy. SteamWorld Build, the game preceding Headhunter, performed poorly in sales, especially for Nintendo Switch which usually accounted for most of SteamWorld's revenue and player-base. The game's publisher, Thunderful Group, like many others on this list, then underwent significant financial restructuring, including laying off around a 100 members of staff.

The same financial report from 2024 confirmed that the game was removed from the Thunderful's list of upcoming releases and put on indefinite hold. No further details were provided and we haven't had any updates since. The fact that the publisher stopped short of an outright cancellation does offer some cause for optimism, but the odds are about as favorable as life in SteamWorld's steam-powered hellscape.

After battling Galactus and pinning Hulk Hogan in the main event of Wrestlemania, I've taken a break from living in fantasy worlds, to focus on writing about them. I'm a comic book geek, a wrestling mark, a break dancer, and a scientist. One of those things may not be true.
