20 Best NES Games Of All Time

8. Dragon Quest IV

When it comes to traditional JRPGs for the NES you can't get better than Dragon Quest IV.

Yeah, like most early JRPGs, Dragon Quest IV is not some clever subversion of the genre nor is it something that hasn't been improved upon on later systems - especially the SNES which is where JRPGs truly came into their element. No, the game might not be up there with the likes of Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Persona 5, and Mother 3 but it's an excellent game which in the weird world of NES JRPGs, is hard to come by.

The game is split across five different chapters. The first four establish the characters other than the protagonist, and the fifth chapter is about the protagonist meeting the characters established in the first four and going on a quest to save the world.

It's a really clever way to establish the party members who will be by your side, as they're shown off as the heroes of their own stories before they become party members.

The game is good, if you want to play a traditional NES JRPG then Dragon Quest IV is your best bet.
