20 Best NES Games Of All Time

9. Ninja Gaiden

super mario bros 3
Team Ninja

Ninja Gaiden is one of the most important titles when it comes to how stories are told in video games.

Looking at the tale told in the original NES Ninja Gaiden nowadays isn't going to leave you speechless or anything, as it's a cheesy narrative about ninjas and demons, but Ninja Gaiden is a game where you'll beat a level or two and then be greeted by an animated cutscene.

It highlighted that games could have a deeper narrative. That a game's story didn't have to be as simple as just saving a princess or beating a bad guy. They could have twists and turns and character motives could change. They could be more than just a good time.

But the cutscenes aren't the only reason that Ninja Gaiden deserves a spot on this list, as it's also a really well-designed game that's incredibly difficult yet immensely satisfying.

Ninja Gaiden makes you feel like a ninja. Very few NES titles can say that about themself.
