Everybody knows the story of Super Mario Bros. 2. The original Super Mario Bros. 2 was released in Japan, but it was too hard so in the west we got a reskinned version of the game Doki Doki Panic.

This whole story makes it sound like we westerners got the short end of the stick. That's until you realise that the Doki Doki Panic reskin we got is a far better game than the original Super Mario Bros. 2.

The "real" Super Mario Bros. 2 which we got as The Lost Levels feels like the earliest example of a "troll game". It's genuinely bad, yet the reskin we got is great.

In the western version of the game, you get to play as Mario, Luigi, Peach, or Toad. Each character has unique abilities adding some good replay value.

The game introduces iconic Mario enemies like Bob-ombs and Shy Guys, and it also has enough to distinguish itself from later entries such as a focus on vertical level design and the ability to pluck items from the ground.

The weird story behind its release is normally all that people talk about when discussing this title which is unfair as the title itself is amazing.
