The original 1993 Doom is hailed as one of the most significant games in the video game industry as it helped define the first person shooter genre while also inspiring numerous games that would try and copy its formula.

As players took control of an unnamed space marine - later dubbed Doomguy - they would traverse a series of levels set on military bases on the moons of Mars and in Hell itself. Using the latest in 3D graphics at the time, Doom was able to create an experience like no other.

While the levels were presented in a 3D perspective, enemies and objects were in 2D sprites and levels often followed a labyrinthine design. Enemy demons would either attack from a distance or up close and even attack each other.

But all technical achievements aside, the games main selling point was its collection of deadly weapons, such as the iconic shotguns, chainsaw and BFG 9000.

id Software created one of the most important games in all of video gaming history and looks to be going from strength to strength with 2016’s Doom and 2020’s Doom Eternal.
