They say that imitation is the greatest form of flattery. So when enough games copy your style to the point where the term Metroidvania is used to describe them, it's safe to assume that you have an inspirational game on your hands, and this is most certainly the case with Metroid.

Combining the adventure elements of the Legend of Zelda series and the platforming of the Super Mario series, Metroid offered a great nonlinear gameplay experience, with a dark science fiction atmosphere.

Metroid lets players explore a massive interlinked world as they search for various weapons, upgrades and items needed to progress the story. It was one of the first 2D side scrollers to allow exploration to both the left and right, as well as encouraging backtracking in order to progress through previously closed off areas.

But it was not just the game design that made Metroid so popular. Samus Aran is one of the most iconic bounty hunters in all of science fiction. Her Power Suit gives her the ability to roll into a ball in order to fit into tight gaps and plant bombs while her Arm Cannon allows her to fire missiles and lasers.
