In most games where an artificial intelligence is trying to kill you, it's not really the AI you are afraid of, so much as how it tries to kill you that generates any fear. But in the case of SHODAN, players went up against an AI that came across as truly psychotic.
Players take control of a nameless hacker who wakes up on a space station taken over by a malfunctioning AI, SHODAN, who plans to use the station's mining lasers to destroy cities on Earth and establish itself as a god. Players must hack their way around the station's terminals and computers in order to stop SHODAN, as well as fight the hordes of cyborgs and mutants loose on the station.
Players feel like SHODAN is really out to get them, as she constantly mocks players with her eery and unsettling voice throughout the game and tries to hinder their progress with traps and sabotage.
The game was highly praised for its clever puzzles and its presentation and utilisation of Cyberspace - the 3D environment players must navigate through when initiating a hack.
