Netflix's Stranger Things might be currently acing that small town Twin Peaks style horror on the small screen, but we shouldn't forget that gaming was doing the exact same thing just as well years ago with the Xbox 360's Alan Wake.

Following the titular novelist on vacation to the seaside town of Bright Falls, Remedy Entertainment's underrated shooter quickly devolves into a nightmare Stephen King would be proud of, as the manuscript Alan can't remember writing comes to life to wreck havoc on the village.

And with the residents of the town either acting suspiciously or going missing altogether, you're forced to go down the rabbit hole in order to solve the haunting mystery that's plaguing Bright Falls.

Although, as previously stated, the plot to Remedy's game wears its David Lynch and Stephen King inspiration on its sleeve, it dares to be ambiguous and dreamlike in ways other big Triple-A games never would. As a result, the title manages to be one of the weirdest - and one of the best - modern horror games that you can get your hands on.
