20 Best Video Game Storylines Of The Decade (So Far)
17. Call Of Duty: Black Ops
Yeah yeah, I know there's going to be plenty of people wondering why a Call of Duty game made this list when indie darlings like Everybody's Gone to The Rapture didn't, but bear with me.
CoD has made the list because the first Black Ops not only has the best storyline of the entire franchise, but its cold war inspired tale is one of the best narratives to grace a first-person shooter ever.
While the missions themselves don't deviate from the classic CoD formula, the idea that they're being recalled while your character is being interrogated by an unknown group to discuss his military history - ranging from all out assaults in Vietnam to off-the-books prison busts in Russia - is an intoxicating premise.
And all of these missions revolve around remembering a set of mysterious numbers that supposedly hold the key to stopping some kind of imminent threat. The only problem is your character isn't exactly all there, and between a serious case of brainwashing and PTSD, it's unclear whether anything he's telling the interrogators is actually true.
It's far more complex than any CoD game has a right to be, and for the first time showed players that the franchise's story mode was more than just filler to teach you the basics of its gripping multiplayer.
