15. Resident Evil 7
Though Outlast 2 takes the cake for most cerebral horror, Resident Evil's rebirth as a first-person corridor-crawler was the perfect way to tip a nod towards the old school, whilst injecting enough new elements to keep everything moving along nicely.
Big, spooky mansion? Check. Fun, campy villains and lots of satisfying weapons to bust out? Check. Going completely overboard in the finale to have a "monster moment", just 'cause? Triple check.
Capcom have clearly spent this decade eyeballing everything from Slender Man to P.T., and although RE7 is actually surprisingly short (without the additional story DLC), it feels perfectly paced - like a playable horror movie that ticks all the best boxes in quick succession.
