4. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Flipping our expectations for open-world RPGs - the likes of which were established by Bethesda and Elder Scrolls - The Witcher 3 is all about Geralt, and a story filled with memorable characters.
An emotion-stripped bounty hunter of the supernatural, Wild Hunt turns a freeform action adventure template into so much more. Murder mystery clue-finding sequences let you track all sorts of mythical creatures, foster-daughter Ciri is a fundamental part of Geralt's development (and which ending you get), wife Yennefer factors into the White Wolf remembering the life they had together, and the surrounding world is loaded with weapons, stories, enemies and lore to take in.
Red Dead Redemption 2 might have the most detailed environment in gaming history, but The Witcher 3 stunningly recreates Andrzej Sapkowski's original novels, then adds CD Projekt RED's flair surrounding the Butcher of Blaviken himself.
