20 Biggest Video Game Bombs Of 2025

7. Painkiller

The original Painkiller follows a man trapped in Purgatory, who must battle demons to earn a place in Heaven. Inspired by Quake and Serious Sam, the cosmic shooter was praised for its straightforward gameplay and expansive multilayer modes.

Though fans were hoping the 2012 remake would help Painkiller transition from cult-classic to global phenomenon, Painkiller: Hell & Damnation didn't live up to its predecessor. So, when it was announced a reboot was in the works, it was another chance for Painkiller to reclaim its glory days.

But after experiencing 2025's Painkiller, players may draw the conclusion they were too harsh on the 2012 version. The latest iteration strays so far from the original, it might as well be a different game. You're basically forced to play co-op, since solo missions have you accompanied with laughably bad AI.

Beyond that, the game suffers from uninspired design. Levels are bland, enemy variety is limited, and gunplay lacks anything that resembles creativity. Although the first Painkiller was known for its gothic tone, this version is filled with quippy humour, which is extra cringey thanks to the dire voice-acting.

By trading innovation for generic shooter tropes, it's not hard to understand why nobody is playing this soulless reimagining.
