These days, it's easy to measure the quality of the game by the number of copies it managed to sell, whether it's an AAA production or a small indie project.

However, rating games like this is too simplistic. In reality, there are plenty of amazing titles that didn't manage to sell well, and to acknowledge their potential, you have to look beyond the labels of "hits" and "flops."

These underrated gems don't deserve to be called failures. While they might have bombed in the sales department, the quality of their gameplay, story, mechanics, and more is so great that you'll quickly realize the public lost out on masterpieces.

The reasons behind their downfall on the market can vary. Some might have come out at the wrong time, some may not have had the budget to advertise themselves, and some might have even been sabotaged by their own developer.

Despite this, they are still incredible titles that are worth playing, and they deserve a better reception than what they got.

If you've never heard of them before or thought they're bad, do yourself a favor and see why these "flops" are a must-play!

20. Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath

The Oddworld series is a beloved franchise mostly known for its flagship title, Abe’s Oddysee.

Each Oddworld game is set in the series’ unique universe full of strange creatures and complete with enough lore to write a whole saga.

Before Oddworld made its return with a remake of Abe’s Oddysee and a sequel in 2014 and 2021, respectively, the franchise released four games in total. The final title in this cycle, Stranger's Wrath, is easily the most interesting in terms of its premise, and yet at the time of its release, it was a total commercial failure that contributed to Oddworld fading into obscurity for the next nine years.

Unlike other Oddworld games, which focused on alien creatures escaping their inhuman working conditions, Stranger’s Wrath took the series in a completely different direction, allowing you to play as a mysterious bounty hunter in the less civilized part of Oddworld.

This Western-inspired title featured in-depth bounty-hunting gameplay and gunfighting combat that was not only unique to Oddworld but also to the entire gaming industry in general.

The game could’ve easily fostered a hype for the Wild West five years before Red Dead Redemption, but due to EA’s poor marketing, Stranger’s Wrath couldn’t even break even in sales.
