20 Biggest Video Game BOMBS That Deserved Better
2. Prey
Prey is an immersive sim developed by the studio many would consider the king of the genre: Arkane.
The game tells a deeply intricate and fascinating story topped with incredibly creative powers that have never been explored by any other game since Prey’s 2017 release.
So why is it then that to this day barely anyone has even heard of it?
Well, the short answer to this question is intellectual property rights.
As the name might suggest (and not much else besides it), Prey is a reboot of the 2006 first-person shooter of the same name. Work on the sequel began shortly after the commercial success of the first Prey, however, in 2011, the intellectual property rights to the franchise were transferred to Bethesda.
Starting from here, the game’s development started to spiral, first with the three changes to the game’s development team, and then the decision to completely reboot the franchise instead of making a sequel.
As a result, Prey (2017) ended up being nothing like Prey (2006), and although on its own the 2017 release is a brilliant title about shapeshifting aliens and mind powers, its drastic change has estranged most of the original game’s fanbase and left everyone else confused about what game Bethesda was actually selling.
