20 Classic Nintendo Games That Desperately Deserve Sequels
13. Wrecking Crew
Who doesn't love a game where the objective is to destroy everything? Wrecking Crew is another early NES "Black Box" title, featuring Mario and Luigi as demolition experts who go around old buildings, knocking down walls and ladders with their hammers while avoiding mutant wrenches, evil walking eggplants, and the treacherous Foreman Spike. This is the kind of game which could potentially benefit from a 3D update, as well as the ability to share the levels you've designed with other players through an online connection. As it happens, though, the game did receive one sequel... Wrecking Crew '98 was a Japanese-exclusive release for the Super Famicom (Super NES)'s "Nintendo Power" service (not related to the magazine of the same name). This version of the title adds more emphasis on the "puzzle" elements of the original, combined with the competitive element often found in Nintendo's puzzle titles. The goal here is to stack as many tiles on your opponent's field by destroying as many as you can in your own. It even has a story mode about Bowser building various new hideouts which are blocking sunlight from the Mushroom Kingdom's plant life, thus prompting Mario to tear them all down by hand. If Nintendo has no intent of developing a sequel to Wrecking Crew, one might hope they will at least release Wrecking Crew '98 on the Virtual Console someday.
