With artificial intelligence creeping its way into films, search engines, and music, it was inevitable the futuristic technology would slip into the realm of gaming. For this reason, it's no surprise that many gaming controversies in 2025 involve AI.
Although the text-to-speech program used for ARC Raiders' dialogue sounded lifeless, people were more pissed off by AI featuring at all. Introducing an AI-powered Darth Vader into Fortnite was funny at first, but it wasn't long before players found ways to break the system, leading to the nefarious Sith spouting profanity. AI-generated assets were discovered in Black Ops 7, urging players to review-bomb the recent Call of Duty game into oblivion.
Even though there's a ton of cynicism directed towards AI, it's looks like the polarising technology is here to stay (and not just in gaming). Around 20% of games released this year on Steam used AI in some capacity, implying the tech isn't going anywhere any time soon.
However, it's difficult to say whether game developers or studios will find ways to utilise AI fairly or if the stigma surrounding it will improve.
