20 Games That Made The Movies BETTER
18. Disney's Aladdin (1993)
One of the cornerstone films of the Disney empire, Aladdin westernised the Arabic folk hero, rounded off the edges, and threw in Robin Williams for good measure. And of course a video game of the same followed the next year. But while Disney has always done its best to generate as much brand synergy around its releases as possible, this was the first time they nailed the game.
The Sega version of the game (and specifically the Sega version) is a tidy side-scroller in which you take control of Aladdin and go on a quest to find the magic lamp and win Princess Jasmine's heart. It features graphics that are way ahead of its time, fully capturing the film's aesthetic and offers a faithful adaptation of the film and its characters.
But more than just the rote retelling of films that most tie-ins of the time were, this game gives us the opportunity to explore Aladdin's world and abilities in greater depth. Yes, it follows the film's story, but it also takes us on adventures along the way that elevate it, while bringing background and aesthetic elements from the film - like the fruit and vases, the Agrabah citizens and Jafar's own lamp - to life.
