17 Gaming Secrets Only Losers Discover
12. Dancing With Abaddon (Guild Wars Nightfall)
The Guild Wars series has been one of the most beloved MMORPG franchises for over 20 years, and judging by the widespread excitement and curiosity surrounding the recently announced Guild Wars 3, its reign won’t stop anytime soon.
Aside from its expansive gameplay options, appealing visual style, and memorable heroes, the games’ mixture of serious dark fantasy storytelling with clever – and occasionally self-aware – humor is what keeps fans coming back for each new chapter and sequel.
The subtly silly secret that greets cocky players at the end of 2006’s Nightfall is proof perfect of that tonal balance.
Throughout Guild Wars’ third standalone campaign, gamers attempt to vanquish evil god Abaddon and prevent a cataclysmic event called Nightfall that’d basically cause hell on Earth – or, rather, on Elona. The final confrontation with Abaddon occurs within the Realm of Torment, with the mandatory bits of magic and self-sacrifice leading to an epic battle to save the day.
You can choose another plan of attack, unrestrained dancing, to confuse and conquer Abaddon, but the results are far from effective. Sure, Abaddon starts boogying with you – specifically, he does the famous Twist dance from Pulp Fiction – but then he kills you while gloating, “You got served!”
Did Guild Wars just reference Chris Stoke’s 2004 drama/music film? Who saw that coming?
