It’s an age-old tale: a gruff former cop loses his family and embarks on a violent and twisted quest for revenge while uncovering a larger conspiracy looming over his vendetta.

In the case of iconic 2001 neo-noir Max Payne, though, the titular detective’s drive to avenge his murdered wife and daughter was elevated by its revolutionary “bullet time” mechanic lifted from cinematic powerhouses such as The Matrix.

Given all the physical and emotional pain Max endures during his path toward vengeance, as well as the inciting injustices done to his loved ones, he definitely deserves to beat the baddies and survive his ordeal. That's especially true when it comes to Max dishing out punishment to chief villain – and CEO of Aesir Corporation – Nicole Horne.

The final chapter of the game should deliver that outcome.

Essentially, it focuses on Max killing his way to the top of Aesir’s headquarters to defeat Horne. She tries escaping in a helicopter, but the disgruntled detective splits the suspension cables of a huge antenna so that it falls onto the chopper. He watches with glee as Horne’s helicopter crashes to the ground in glorious slow-mo.

Alternatively, Max doesn’t knock down the antenna, the helicopter pumps him full of lead before flying away, and gamers discover a particularly vicious and tragic secret.
