20 Greatest Strategy Games Of All Time

6. Warcraft III: Reign Of Chaos

Developer: Blizzard Entertainment Released: 2002 After the immense success of its predecessor Warcraft II and Blizzard's still-popular StarCraft, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos had a lot resting on its shoulders. Thankfully, Warcraft III was able to live up to expectations and then some, thanks to a brilliantly versatile engine, excellent gameplay and terrific narrative. Key to Warcraft III's success is its implementation of hero units, who are able to level up and equip items much like an RPG. This helps to enhance the tragic, epic story of Arthas and company, which takes place across an incredible campaign filled with exciting set pieces and remarkably good pre-rendered cutscenes. Warcraft III was also very mod-friendly, most notably leading to the popularity of DoTA.
