20 Most Controversial Games of the 2020s (So Far)
18. Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Though broadly well-received by critics upon release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard proved considerably more contentious with general players, the game effectively becoming a battleground of conflicting opinions and agendas.
Many felt that The Veilguard simply strayed too far from the gameplay style of previous Dragon Age games, with a more action-orientated bent which streamlined the strategic elements to its detriment, all while its generic, repetitive quests were very obviously ported over from the original live-service version of the game.
Elsewhere the more light-hearted, high-fantasy tone took some by surprise, as well as the abundance of quip-heavy dialogue throughout, all while the usual suspects harped on about it being "woke" - though the less said about that discourse, frankly the better.
All in all The Veilguard was a far shallower, more inconsistent experience than previous Dragon Age games, and even most who enjoyed it surely appreciated that it didn't live up to a full decade's worth of anticipation.
Was it terrible? No, but to see a legendary RPG franchise trot out a "just fine" identikit RPG was heartbreaking in its own way.
