Japanese horror was prolific in the early 2000s. While classics like Resident Evil and Silent Hill pioneered the survival horror genre, the PlayStation 2 was likewise home to many other spooky gems from Japan.

One title that doesn't get the recognition that it should is Rule Of Rose.

Developed by Punchline and set in 1930s England, this survival horror saw players take on the role of 19-year-old orphan Jennifer. After arriving at a rundown orphanage, she quickly finds herself trapped on a strange airship at the mercy of a sinister group of children who call themselves the Red Crayon Aristocrats.

What follows is a hauntingly beautiful and surreal fairytale that sees players unearth a narrative that explores themes of childhood trauma and abuse. However, due to an overblown media controversy prior to its release, Rule Of Rose was banned in several countries, subsequently making it one of the the PS2's rarest titles.

Rule Of Rose is simultaneously one of the best but underplayed horror games of its generation. With updated controls fixing its infamous combat and modern visuals making its world more immersive than ever before, a remake is exactly what's needed to resurrect this almost forgotten masterpiece.
