20 PS2 Games That Still Hold Up

2. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Shadow of the Colossus Gaius
Rockstar

Just when Vice City seemed like the definitive Grand Theft Auto experience, San Andreas broke the mould once more. As can be expected, there are more activities, mission variety, drivable vehicles, interactive environments, enhanced combat, and weapon systems than ever.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Rather than settling for one region, Rockstar's masterpiece has the action take place in three cities. Despite only coming out two years after Vice City, the graphics were vastly superior, offering improved draw distance, detailed character models, and environmental effects, like fog and day-night cycles. It introduced territory control, allowing players to defend their neighbourhoods from rival gangs.

The customisation was so high-standard, Vice City seemed basic by comparison. Although the previous protagonist had a set look, CJ Johnson could have his weight, muscles, tattoos, hairstyles, and clothing altered. These options weren't purely cosmetic, since they could affect CJ's stamina, driving skill, and ability to perform missions, adding a layer of personal investment and strategy.

So, while we wait for GTAVI (please don't be delayed again), feel free to revisit one of the most quintessential instalments in Rockstar's prized property.
