20 PS2 Games That Still Hold Up

Although the phrase “subvert expectations” is thrown around a lot, it’s hard to think of a game that pulled it off better than Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty.

First-time players initially believed they were reprising the role of our former hero, Solid Snake, only to learn most of the main campaign is experienced through a new lead, Raiden. This bait-and-switch not only shocked audiences, but served as a deliberate commentary on player identity, perspective, and the nature of storytelling.

Also, MGS2's technical innovation cannot be applauded enough. Hideo Kojima's magnum opus showcased cinematic presentation, complex AI behaviour, and environmental interactivity that was breath-taking. Guards noticed footprints, broken bottles, and shadows, creating an alarming sense of realism.

Even though the best games can age badly, Sons of Liberty feels better than ever, thanks to its almost prophetic plot. The themes involving disinformation, digital information control, and post-truth manipulation are so relevant nowadays, it's hard to believe this came out in 2001.

Although the series has released daunting sequels, spin-offs, and reboots, none have transcended the gaming medium quite like Metal Gear Solid 2.
