20 PS2 Games That Still Hold Up

12. Kingdom Hearts II

Shadow of the Colossus Gaius

Even though Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy exist in a fantastical world, it was hard to tell if they could function in Square's Kingdom Hearts, especially since the company's RPGs tend to deal with mature content.

Against the odds, the wondrous role-player flawlessly fused whimsical Disney properties with the complexity of the Final Fantasy universe.

With that said, Kingdom Hearts II improved in almost every department (apart from the very, very long-winded prologue). The sequel showcased a more connected world, customisable abilities, and more complex combat, which combines real-time strategy, magic, and summons.

KHII expanded the cast significantly, incorporating characters from Pirates of the Caribbean, Mulan, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. More importantly, Disney characters felt less like fan-service since they were cleverly interwoven into the narrative.

Heroes like Sora and Riku underwent a lot of growth, while interactions with Disney characters carried surprising depth. Although it was a dream come true to fight alongside Mickey and Goofy in the previous game, more attention was put on exploring the relationships between the iconic characters this time, so you really get a sense of who they are.
