7. Rock Band 4 Bombs Because Everyone Sold Their Plastic Guitars
Release Date: November or December The Hype: The first core game in the series in 5 years following the rhythm guitar genre's harsh commercial decline, Rock Band 4 will be attempting to win fans back by focusing more on social and online play rather than trying to instruct players to transition from plastic to actual guitar play (as the third game did rather unsuccessfully). Why It Might Suck: One major hurdle facing the game is that a lot of players no doubt sold their plastic guitar peripherals years ago after it seemed like the series wasn't ever coming back. Are those people going to want to shell out for some expensive new current-gen instruments? Not a chance. Even ignoring its cost-prohibitive nature, the real challenge is in how Harmonix can innovate the franchise. The concept of the games is relatively straight-forward and it's hard to imagine how it can be truly reworked in a way that distinguishes it from the earlier titles. If it's just another down-the-line Rock Band game, it may as well just be glorified DLC, and then there's really no point in releasing it on current-gen consoles.
