20 Recent Indies That Put AAA To Shame

5. Tunic Isn't Afraid Of Giving Players Freedom

Tunic is another independent title that beats most AAA games in terms of creativity and cutting-edge design. Although the game might appear cutesy and cartoonish, stylistically reminiscent of Link’s Awakening, in reality it is anything but an isometric Legend of Zelda clone.

Tunic is an adventure game, yes, but its combat is far more challenging than your typical Link’s adventure, and its exploration elevates the popular tropes in the genre to the next level.

The sense of discovery is easily the game’s strongest suit, as the player actually has to figure out all of the game’s secrets on their own. Instead of objectives and characters pumping out exposition like their virtual lives depend on it, every single place and every little titbit of the story has to be found out using Tunic’s in-game manual.

Unlike most modern AAA titles, the game doesn’t handhold you through anything and rewards the player for using their own invention to solve its puzzles and uncover more of the story.

It’s the perfect game for those who are tired of forced tutorials and being dragged around from objective to objective by games that are too afraid of letting you play unattended.
