For a lot of people, Resident Evil presumably served as their first experience with a "scary game" - and the memories of such an encounter are unlikely to have faded. The Resident Evil series is a sprawling, oversized beast of a franchise nowadays, of course, but it all started here - with a team of S.T.A.R.S. finding themselves trapped in an old mansion and facing off against hordes of the undead.

If the series has improved on a technical level since this dawn of the dead, the original Resident Evil is still the scariest. Who can forget, after all, that inimitable moment towards the start of the game, where - moving along a passageway lined with windows - players were attacked unexpectedly by a zombified dog as it shattered both glass and our nerves, an event which assumedly convinced at least half of the players to switch off their consoles and hide beneath the covers?

The fact that gamers were given little ammo and supplies and were forced to ration their arsenal... well, it defined Resident Evil as the definite horror gaming experience.
