20 Severely Underrated 90s Video Games You Forgot You Loved

7. Outlaws - PC, 1997

Since Red Dead Redemption, it seems like the western genre is a natural fit for a gunplay-focused video game. But this was not the case back in 1997, when the tendency was towards darker, grungier first-person shooters that on some level involved demons, aliens, or other supernatural beasties. That's why Outlaws was so refreshing, taking place in the arid deserts, vast canyons, and frontier towns of the wild west. The game ran on Lucasarts' Jedi Engine, and had a twanging, whistling Morricone-inspired soundtrack that will trigger the sentimentality of Spaghetti Western fans. Its story was exceptionally cinematic, interspersed with animated cut-scenes depicting Marshall's quest to avenge the death of his wife. Despite its obscurity, Outlaws has received various accolades over the years, making IGN's list of 10 Greatest Video-Game Albums in 2008, and being lauded by legendary FPS designer John Romero as one of the best shooters of all time. Thankfully, justice has been done to this overlooked classic, which has now received a digital release on GOG.com.
