20 Severely Underrated 90s Video Games You Forgot You Loved

8. Battle Circuit - Arcade, 1997

This kooky and idiosyncratic arcade beat-'em-up from Capcom remains largely unknown because it was overshadowed by the company's very own Street FIghter and Darkstalkers series. At least Capcom can take some comfort from the fact that it shot itself in the foot rather than have someone else do the shooting for them, but it's a shame that this bonkers side-scrolling fighter didn't get a run on the home consoles. Players could team up with three other people to traverse a garish world filled with eccentric punky enemies and psychedelic settings. Among the five playable characters were 'Pink Ostrich' - a girl riding a pink ostrich, obviously - and Alien Green, a floral-looking alien that looks like a Venus Fly Trap that's eaten far too much Miracle-Gro. Maybe Battle Circuit's problem was that it was just too flamboyant for conservative western gamers - who were drawn to more grounded/western-fantasy fighters like Streets of Rage, Final Fight and Golden Axe. Whatever the case, the only place you'll find this game these days is on an arcade machine emulator.
