Want more blood and gore from a fighting game? ABACABB.

This was the cheat code that allowed SEGA users to switch on the uncensored fatalities mode on the Mega Drive version of Mortal Kombat.

And what a difference it made. No longer were gamers restricted to a tame punch or a tepid kick in order to gain a victory - ABACABB gave them the power to fist heads clean off shoulders, rip out hearts and tear out spinal cords at will.

Germany, Brazil and South Korea weren't happy and banned the game straight away.

Developers have always sought to include violence where they felt it would be expected and while much ore explicit titles are readily available today in 1992 Mortal Kombat's optional blood mode really dialled up the controversy.

These days ABACABB is a phrase occasionally whispered by 30-somethings after a bad day at work along with... FINISH HIM!!!

Semi-interesting fact: The code is a nod to ABACAB, an album by the rock band Genesis which happened to be the original name for SEGA's 16-bit console in the United States.
