Hollow Knight is a 2D Metroidvania partially funded through Kickstarter, which eventually saw a first release on PC before going on to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Like many small budget games, Hollow Knight begins with very little explanation or backstory and you are tasked with piecing it together through progression and interactions with non-playable characters you meet along the journey. The game is designed to encourage exploration with some areas being inaccessible without certain key items, skill upgrades coming in later, and the possibility to go back to previously visited areas. All of these have an effect on making the game rewarding and not simply a dull and straightforward affair.
There is free DLC to increase game content, and a sequel called Hollow Knight: Silksong is in production.
