Following hot on the heels of Assassin's Creed II and its sequels, Brotherhood and Revelations, Assassin's Creed III arrived at a time when the franchise's popularity was peaking. After the adventures of popular Assassin Ezio Salvatore had drawn to a close with Revelations, it was time for a new story in a new era, and Assassin's Creed 3 took the action to 18th-Century Colonial America.

The prologue opens with players introduced to the new protagonist, Haytham Kenway, who doesn't seem strange in the slightest at first, with players believing they are stepping into the shoes of an already-established member of the Assassin's Creed as in previous titles.

At the end of the prologue, however, the rug is quite literally pulled from the player's feet when it's revealed Haytham is in fact a member of the Templar Order, the sworn rival of the Assassin's Creed, whose members had served as the primary antagonists of the series up to this point. This reveal is completely unexpected.

The action and perspective quickly shifts to Haytham's son, Connor, who players play as for the remainder of the story as he becomes an Assassin and attempts to bring down his father's organization. The clever twist is still remembered as one of Ubisoft's finest to this day, and did nothing but enhance the game's already strong reputation.
