20 Video Games That Punish You For Being Too Skilled

9. Adaptive AI - Alien: Isolation

Oblivion Remastered
Sega

Alien: Isolation is a horror game that is best known for its titular antagonist, the alien xenomorph.

The developers put a lot of effort into making this iconic villain as dangerously intelligent as its movie counterpart, creating a special AI that not only learns from your gameplay but also adapts to it.

And what this means is that every time you get better at evading the monster, the monster becomes better at seeking you out.

Thanks to its programming, the alien is capable of countering your tactics the longer you use them. For example, once you learn how to hide in lockers and under desks, after you use these hiding spots a few more times, the creature will learn to start searching these hiding spots, preventing you from using them.

Similar adaptiveness takes place with weapons and other defensive items, meaning that the moment you get good at using them, the game will punish you for it by making it harder to use them against the alien.

To actually get good at the game, you have to stop relying on your skill and focus more on constantly adapting to your cunning opponent.
