20 Video Games That Punish You For Being Too Skilled

3. Increased Spawn - Resident Evil 4 Remake

Resident Evil 4 can get absolutely brutal on higher difficulty levels as the enemies get real tough and your limited amount of supplies can only do so much against them.

This said, you technically don’t need to play on extra high difficulties to experience a challenge because the game secretly makes stages harder based on your performance as well.

While Resident Evil 4 does come with separate difficulty settings, it also features a secret scaling system where the less you die and get hit, the tougher your enemies become. The system mostly has to do with spawn rates of the Plaga-infested monsters, increasing the number of enemies you have to defend yourself and Ashley against the longer you stay alive.

While the concept is pretty simple, in practice, having larger waves of enemies attack you can actually be very punishing, especially if you play on higher difficulty settings. It’s easy to get completely overwhelmed when the monsters’ number doesn’t seem to ever shrink, and just one mistake can cost you your winning streak.

There’s a reason this is considered to be one of the toughest entries in the franchise.
