With so many Greek myths to pull from, it's no surprise to learn a whole plethora of content was drafted for the God of War series before it was cut.

One of the most interesting aspects to be expelled from the franchise has to be Atlantis from God of War II. Level design documents detail a massive submerged city, blending ancient Greek architecture with fantastical underwater elements. Kratos was supposed to travel to Atlantis to seek the aid of the Titans and uncover more about his destiny.

Atlantis would've required complex water mechanics and new traversal systems, including underwater combat. At the time, the PlayStation 2’s hardware was already being pushed to its limits, so it's possible these features were too daunting or time-consuming to include.

Although Atlantis was reworked into God of War: Ghost of Sparta, there were elements sketched for God Of War II that didn't survive, such as a boss battle against the Titan of the Ocean, Oceanus. Based on how epic the Poseidon battle was in God Of War III, it would've been awe-inspiring to see Kratos face a water deity that was arguably more powerful.
