8. Connor/Markus/Kara (Detroit: Become Human)

The sheer number of potential narrative permutations makes it difficult to say much concrete about Detroit: Become Human's characters, but you sure can't fault David Cage for giving players a ton of freedom to shape the story as they saw fit.

The central trio of playable android characters are a blast, with police investigator Connor being the easy fan favourite of the three, in large part thanks to Bryan Dechart's excellent performance.

Markus meanwhile follows along the more conventional lines of an Android Jesus-type character, and his arc generally has the potential to end up the silliest.

Housekeeper android Kara is meanwhile brilliantly performed by Valorie Curry, even if her maternal storyline feels a little too cliched and reductive for a female protagonist in 2018.

Connor's brilliant portrayal alone is enough to earn Detroit the #8 spot on this list. Some have argued that the game could have - and perhaps should have - focused solely on Connor, but regardless, the triptych of character-driven stories add up to a highly compelling whole.
