25 Best Sega Games Of All Time - RANKED

9. Sonic The Hedgehog

Would Sega ever have had the success they did if it wasn't for the success of Sonic the Hedgehog?

An absolute icon of gaming everywhere, probably only second to Mario, Sonic's humble beginnings originate on the Mega Drive in an adventure that was quite unlike anything else on the market at the time. Although he's not as fast as he is in subsequent instalments in the series, Sonic was all about speed.

While Mario was busy jumping his way across intricate platforms, Sonic was running around loops, bouncing off springs and bopping Robotnik straight on his noggin, all with a sense of classic 90's attitude and style.

If you've played any Sonic game after this and go back to Sonic 1, it can be tricky to pick up and play as its a more sluggish adventure, particularly as it doesn't have the spin dash first picked up in Sonic 2. That said, it's still every bit as fantastic as it was when it first released; you just need to retrain your brain and see it as a slightly different, more calculated and precise Sonic game than its sequels were.

There's no doubt that Sonic the Hedgehog is certainly one of the best games Sega has ever created and this laid the foundations to dominate the home console market back in the 90's.
