25 Best Sega Games Of All Time - RANKED

8. Sonic CD

Yakuza game
Sega

Sonic CD is a weird enigma in the Sonic series. Released only for the Sega CD in 1993, it was the best selling game for the CD with over 1.5 million copies sold. Given the high price of the Sega CD unit, however, it's not hard to believe that most Sonic fans probably missed this one back in the day.

Nowadays, it's much more freely available, and has been re-released on everything from Sonic compilation collections to mobile devices.

Sonic CD is sort of a hybrid between Sonic 1, and everything that comes after, mixed up with time travel shenanigans. It looks, visually, most similarly to Sonic 1, but it includes the spin dash and a new 'peel-out' move which enhance the speed of the game.

The big difference is the inclusion of time travel gates throughout levels. The goal of it is to travel back to the 'past' of the zone, destroy a machine which spawns robots, then travel to the 'future' which is now considered 'good'. If you travel to the future without destroying the transporter in the past, you'll get a 'bad future'. This means that every zone has several distinct variations, depending on what time period you travel to.

It's a unique take on the Sonic series, and is definitely worthy of a place on the top 25 Sega games of all time list.
