5 Great Horror Moments In Non-Horror Games
4. Scarecrow Nightmares - Batman: Arkham Asylum)
Batman's presence induces a very primal fear into the minds of even the hardest criminals across Gotham, but when pitted against his enemy The Scarecrow it's hard to figure out who's actually the scariest between them.
In Rocksteady's 2009 bat-flavoured hit, Scarecrow (real name Jonathan Crane) manages to infect the caped crusader with his fear toxin, causing Batsy to hallucinate many a creepy sight; most notably in such a way to trick the player into thinking the game has actually bugged out and restarted before it's shown to be part of the trick.
That level of meta-affecting the real world is a feat worth respect in itself, but the Scarecrow hallucinations remain a tense, unsettling aspect of an already great game with a great atmosphere. It's still a sore point for fans that Arkham Knight didn't feature more Scarecrow fear moments, and when they point to the sequences in Asylum it's not hard to see why.
Scarecrow's attempts to twist the Bat's mind and horrify him might not have worked on the Dark Knight himself, but it is guaranteed to work on anyone playing Arkham Asylum for the first time.
