This rumor has circulated itself around the gaming world ever since last December. The fabled price cut of the Xbox One is all the rage today, that one thought in the back of every gamer's mind. Surely Microsoft would go out of their way to re-release the Xbox One at a cheaper price, seeing as how it's already overpriced at a whopping $500? Perhaps so, and perhaps not. There has been one "well-respected source" according to The Star Online that revealed information about the Xbox One receiving a price drop sometime before the end of 2014. According to the site's tech news, the following was stated about the alleged price drop:
"Responding to suggestions that the Xbox One would see a price cut before too long, a source told VG247 that a new model of the 2013 console would be released before the end of the year and priced at less than the current going rate of US$499."
Although an official price wasn't mentioned, everyone is off to assume that the new retail price for the re-released Xbox One (without the optical drive) would be placed at around $399, the same as the PS4's current retail pricing. That would be a logical guess in the world of rumors, but going off what we know now it shouldn't be taken too lightly. There has been an update, however, from Microsoft's end about the rumored price drop. On February 3rd the International Business Times's own Abigail Elise managed to get word from Microsoft on the matter. Microsoft Chief of Staff for Devices and Studios Group Aaron Greenberg tweeted the following response after being asked about the price drop:
"No, you cannot believe everything you read on the internet."
It's a pretty basic retaliation, and if it comes from Microsoft's side of the battle then it's the most reliable piece of information we can go off of. It seems this is the one rumor that tried spreading wings, only to get shot down not far in its flight to the masses. These five rumors combined, all posted by an anonymous user on NeoGAF on the same thread, surely put up a wide wall of speculation these past couple of days. With all but the Xbox One rumor still possible, it's unknown what the future holds for Xbox fans, especially the Halo fans. Early into 2014 and we already have a strong first wave of controversy and speculation that is sure to be talked about long after being debunked or confirmed. Like this article?
