5 Things The Destiny Beta Is Doing Very Right

3. The Combat

When you've created, sold and been the driving success behind one of the biggest franchises in gaming history, the expectations of excellence will follow you no matter where you go. This can be a gift and a curse, on the one hand, bidding for a multimillion dollar budget for a brand new game is made easier when your CV simply reads "Halo", but on the other hand, you've got to have a guaranteed success. Well, given Bungie's knack for creating robust combat systems, anything less than excellence would not be tolerated. Remember, Bungie popularised the idea of managing a loadout in console shooter games, Halo: Combat Evolved being one of the first to make you decide between only two weapons, forcing you to be tactical in your choice of arsenal. Destiny doesn't divert from this blueprint, you have two primary weapons and then your special skills which are dependent on your class. For instance, the Warlock has powers fairly reminiscent of Mass Effect's biotics, channelling power that can be used to levitate you, throw grenades that act as black holes or even punch an enemy across the map. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqQZMQuOHPg The weaponry is suitably meaty, with a nice selection of assault rifles, sniper rifles, shotguns and even a few hand cannons thrown in for good measure. Each weapon is presented with its own stats and once you've acquired them from a weaponsmith, you can change them at any point through a mission. For instance, if you find that your burst shot assault rifle isn't doing the business against a particular enemy, drop into the menu and swap it for a fully automatic model and rain bullety death upon your foes. Cackling like a megalomaniac is optional.

I am a man of many interests. I am a passionate gamer, running my own YouTube channel (The Gadget Addicts) showing off the best of modern gaming in the form of Let's Play videos. I am an ardent musician, having been a guitarist for the past 13 years. I am also a massive geek, I adore science fiction and fantasy films and TV shows and am trying to work up the courage to start writing a novel. If I can ever think of a good story to tell... I live with my wife in the North East of England and own a belligerent little black cat.
