5 Things The Destiny Beta Is Doing Very Right

2. The Multiplayer

Given how much of a chore it was to get access to the beta at the point of launch, many people were expecting the persistent multiplayer aspect of Destiny to not work either. If the PSN servers couldn't handle the strain of millions of voucher codes being registered, certainly they wouldn't be able to handle the world and its dog playing online together. Surprisingly enough though, the multiplayer worked phenomenally well, with no noticeable lag, dropouts or slowdown within the game. The best way to describe the multiplayer is to imagine Halo (yeah, we're going to compare it a lot, but hey, it's the best Halo game since Halo 3) working like Dark Souls. So you have this wide world, full of places to go and things to do, but your friends can drop into your game at any point if you allow them to. You can set up fire-teams in pre mission lobbies, but players can simply join your team while you're in a mission if you have a spare slot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwqaBYyqz4A You can then become involved with so called "public events" which are something entirely new and wonderfully inspired. Simply enough, part of the way through a mission you will notice the position markers of other human players who aren't in your fire-team. Eventually position markers of objectives will appear on the map and the game will encourage your fire-team to join up with the other players on the map and vanquish waves of tough enemies for an XP boost and possibly some special items. This ad-hoc teamwork adds some great replay value to the main story missions and acts as a brilliant diversion, especially in the larger maps where getting from point A to point B takes a while. In terms of PVP, in the beta there is only the Control game mode for now, which is much like a King Of The Hill mode in that teams of up to 6 Guardians attempt to hold 3 flags across a map for a predetermined amount of time. However, there are many more modes which will be available when the game is launched proper and PVP looks to be a particularly rich source of gameplay within Destiny, hopefully for years to come.
