5 Things The Destiny Beta Is Doing Very Right

4. They've Sorted Out Peter Dinklage's Voiceover

When Bungie announced the public alpha test for Destiny shortly after June, the vast majority of PS4 owners got involved and managed to get their hands on a few hours of the game before the rest of the world did. But one thing that came from the experience that stuck with Destiny was Peter Dinklage's performance. The man many consider to the be the absolute best thing about Game Of Thrones and one of the finest character actors of this generation is in Destiny and for a little while, he was a laughing stock. Dinklage voices your Ghost, a little robot AI that follows you around and acts in a generally helpful manner, hacking doors, providing tactical readouts and imparting little bits of background lore in each area. Think of him along the same lines as Cortana from Halo, ever present, ever helpful and ever so slightly sarcastic. In the Alpha version, people pointed out that Dinklage was talking in a very dry manner, that his voice was emotionless, less Anglicised than people expected (though he is American, so his accent for Tyrion is actually put on) and generally, fell flat. People also criticised his dialogue, with such wonderfully bizarre quotes as "That wizard came from the moon". It all became a big joke really. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjWOUtxTb4U The beta fixes all of this and improves Dinklage's performance without him actually having to step in front of the microphone again. For the beta, Bungie have run his voice through a few filters and effects to make him sound robotic, meaning the flat performance is actually intentional and he genuinely sounds like a slightly dismissive AI, exactly as he was supposed to. While he's not as expressive as Cortana was in the Halo games - he's not meant to be - he is meant to be an impassive companion who's job is to help you, not to be your friend. Lastly, some of his sillier dialogue has been excised from the game, unfortunately including the wizard quote from above which has become something of a cult saying already, to the point where Bungie actually released T-shirts with the quote emblazoned upon them.
