7 Pointless Video Game Characters (Who Were Actually CRUCIAL)

3. The Cat (Ghost Trick)

Oh good, another incidental cat that turns out to be the most important character in the game. Ghost Trick is a novel Capcom adventure on the Nintendo DS, in which you help the deceased spirit of Sissel discover the details of his fate - and save that of a red-headed detective - by possessing various inanimate objects to create complex, environment-altering Rube Goldberg machines.

Coming from Shu Takumi, the brain behind Phoenix Wright, Ghost Trick is predictably irreverent - and like the courtroom drama, has one or two big reveals along the way.

The biggest - and arguably, stupidest - is reserved for the very end. After making all manner of household appliances pivot, swivel and generally fall over to gradually piece together the past, we learn that all this time you weren't the ghost of the red, dead guy, but his cat. His cat!

The clues were there all along. For example, despite being bloke with his arse in the air, Sissel is continually impeded by an unusual inability to read. He also recalls an affinity for cramped, dark places. These are just a couple of details that don't make full sense until the dramatic - dracatic - unveiling.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
