While the other sports on this list have seen the occasional video game throughout the years, water polo is very much the exception. A single title has been released based around the sport, 1987’s Water Polo on the Commodore 64.

Water polo is similar to association football, with the main difference being the water aspect. It is played in an all-deep swimming pool, meaning the players cannot touch the bottom. Water polo teams use only seven players, one of which is a goalkeeper, as opposed to the eleven player teams seen in football.

Water polo is fast becoming a popular sport, having been a fixture of the Summer Olympic Games since 1900. FINA, the international federation responsible for administering international water sports competitions, has also been running several tournaments since the 1970’s including the ‘FINA Water Polo World Cup’ since 1979 and the ‘FINA Water Polo World League’ since 2002. As well as this, water polo has appeared at the ‘FINA World Aquatics Championships’ since 1973.

In recent years, the sport has become very popular in the United States specifically, as well has having a consistent global presence. Despite this, there are currently no video games taking advantage of the interest in water polo, leaving fans of the sport high and dry.
