8 Brilliant Video Games Made Impossible By Terrible Mechanics

2. Donkey Kong 64 And GTA: Sand Andreas - Optional Mission Hell

It might seem cheeky to place two entries under one banner, but on paper, both the Supply Lines Mission from GTA: San Andreas and The Beaver Bother Mini-Game from Donkey Kong 64 are brethren in being utter ball-breakers, as both are entirely optional side quests and both are programmed by the goddam Devil himself.

It seems like just uttering either of these experiences to players will likely send them into a rage as it truly did sour an otherwise brilliant pair of experiences. The Supply Lines mission was a steaming turd when it came to its implementation of flight mechanics, as in the original version the plane would lose fuel even when gliding, and did so at a rate that you had to be nigh on perfect with your controls, and when you remember that this thing handled like the Titanic it made for a controller shattering time. Thankfully this was fixed in the re-releases but for a while this, alongside "All you had to do was follow the train CJ" was infamous amongst the player base.

In a complementary fashion Beaver Bother tasked players with herding beavers into a hole (ooo err vicar) but for some unknown reason, Rare decided to give gamers a truly tight time limit AND make sure that at least one of the furry little bastards would refuse to drop no matter how well you angled your approach. Speedrunners usually only get through this section with a second or two to spare so what chance did mere mortals have.

Luckily as mentioned before, both were optional missions and so only combined into a ball of hatred do they qualify for this list.
