8 Brilliant Video Games Made Impossible By Terrible Mechanics

3. Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed - 1ST Place Items

If there's one thing that kart racing games should always strive to do, it's that they should always try to make the experience feel fun and more importantly, fair.

Nobody likes it when they are dead last in a race designed around party play, and so a lot of these titles include mechanics like rubber-banding to help them catch up and the gap between first and last never seem so large, and restrictions on what items players can get based on their position. Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed however only does one of these things.

Despite being a kart racer of otherwise brilliant quality, the devs forgot to limit the first place racer in what they could pick up, meaning that they could get access to missiles which basically act like Red Shells from the Mario Kart series, even while leading the pack.

This created moments of pure frustration for players looking to pass into pole position only to get a rocket up the tailpipe. There were workarounds to this like aiming to overtake during transformation sections but still, the planning involved should never have been an issue in the first place.
