So this is going to make me sound like the King of All Hipsters here, but sometimes, when it comes to video games, popularity is something that can absolutely ruin the experience.

Well, to be more specific, it's the after-effects of popularity such as the developers trading in on the IP and over saturating the market with merch or losing sight of what the original intention of the project was as it now chases the demands of its ballooning audience, but it all stems from that initial piercing of the mainstream that draws in a deluge of new players to the title.

And for many, the exact moment where the now monolithic Fortnite died, was when the kids arrived.

And to be honest who could blame them? With it's Free-To-Play model, colorful aesthetics, and immediately enjoyable gameplay loop, it ticks all the right boxes. However as soon as the age demographic lowered to cater to these perpetually energetic and overhyped players, many were left feeling like the old man yelling at the clouds.

With aggressively cringey "yo yo my fellow kids" marketing, a drive to be weird for the sake of being weird, and all the pop culture tie ins money could buy, Fortnite became a vehicle that was less the cheeky whippet of the Battle Royale genre and more the over-sugared puppy that chases anything shiny and shits on the rug every now and again.

Kids. They ruin everything.
